How OEE is calculated

OEE multiplies three losses into one number. Want the full walkthrough? Read how to calculate OEE with a worked example.

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality
  • Availability = run time ÷ planned production time. Planned production time is the shift minus breaks and planned stops; run time also subtracts unplanned downtime.
  • Performance = (ideal cycle time × total parts) ÷ run time. It captures slow cycles and minor stops.
  • Quality = good parts ÷ total parts — first-pass yield, scrap and rework count against it.

With the defaults above: planned time 430 min, run time 383 min → Availability 89.1%, Performance 100%, Quality 95.6% — OEE 85.1%, right at the 85% "world class" benchmark for discrete manufacturing.

What's a good OEE?

85% is the usual world-class benchmark; 60% is typical; below 45% means the line is losing more than half its capacity. The number matters less than the trend and knowing which of the three factors is eating you.
